Long gone are the days where a fresh-faced 20-something "works their way up" from the mailroom to the boardroom. My advice to anyone dealing with these questions is to have the courage to be creative in whatever job you are in. A good boss recognizes good talent, and opportunities will open to create the job you want to do. And above all, don't be afraid to get out and start over!
