Presentation does mean a lot. They say don't judge a book by it's cover but it's inevitable that we do, we all do, whether we admit it or not - our first impression of someone is in their appearance. I also am a firm believer in the "dress for success" mentality. This doesn't mean I throw on the Armani suit daily, but I try to keep myself looking sharp. It's funny, when I work from home, I feel unproductive unless I go through the "regular" routine - take a shower, put on some clothes, etc. Somehow, if I try to get work done in my PJs, it just doesn't happen. If you look sloppy, no matter how brilliant you are, people aren't going to take you as seriously - especially if you work in an environment where you interact with clients. I know both types, and I always wonder how some people climb the corporate ladder. This is an excellent example that while there may be times you can get away with an unkempt look and unprofessional manner, it's not always going to pan out in your favor with this strategy.
