This is an interesting dilemma. It's a tough call because you want to appear eager, but you also don't want to shoot yourself in the foot. AS somebody who finished graduate school last year, I got to a point where I started turning down interviews. I actually would ask employers "Can you please tell me if this is a job that pays 10$ or an hour is entry level because that's not what I'm looking for?" After wasting gas money and time on several interviews like that I realized that you had to have a filtering process and place more value on yourself. I know someone who thought a good strategy was to apply to every job on the internet which was a complete waste of time. That person is still not employed. Some alternatives that might work include: using skype or doing video interviews. While it's not the same as doing an interview in person, companies need to be considerate of situations like this. I would be really wary of a company that doesn't pick up travel expenses, especially for a college senior driving 700 miles. But that's just my take.
