Good Morning!
Today is Day 2 of my life as a new Entrepreneur! As promised, I’ve shared my thoughts on the last few days via the below video. In case you aren’t able to view the video while reading this, here’s a recap:
- I’m still super excited to be out on my own! (Let’s hope this rah rah lasts for many more days)
- Working from home is pretty great.
- I’ve identified my products and services, hired an intern who will work for school credit, booked 3 paid speaking gigs, sent a really cool “Small Business Technology Startup Guide” over to an editor (finally, it’s been sitting on my computer for months), and I joined a Toastmasters group too.
- My dog Giada’s monthly daycare bill is almost as much 1 week of unemployment. SHIT.
- Read Jen Lancaster’s book, “Bitter is the new Black.” Hilarious. One of a Kind. Especially if you have ever been laid off.
- I still haven’t found time to clean my room.
If you’ve ever experienced a lay off, lost your job or were a new small business owner I’d love to hear from you. Leave your tips for me in the comments section!

Just came across your blog after seeing your event on eventbrite! I am all of the above, My last day of work is Friday! I am in the process of starting my own small business and I’m very excited about what the future has to bring! KUDOS TO YOU AND I will definitely be following your journey in the twitterverse!
I don’t really understand what you actually do. Are you collecting unemployment and giving advice on being employed?
hahah no Johnny! My business will revolve around branding & promotion, internet marketing and Ms. Career Girl events. In addition I will be hosting workshops on topics like personal branding 2.0, social media for business, small business technology start up camp and female entrepreneur incubators.
Proud of you! Keep it up the energy and positivity and you will be successful in any endeavor you take on!
Hey Nicole! I’m very sorry to hear that you lost your job, but I’m thrilled to see where this takes you! The best opportunities come when people have an open perspective to what’s possible – and with your attitude and drive, you’ll undoubtedly kick ass and create even bigger and better things for yourself.
Keep your head up and let me know if I can help in any way!

You are so awesome! I love your video and your perspective. Keep up the great work, you are going to kick ass, I just know it. I’ve got the “it” factor, you really do. I think you being laid off is a blessing in disguise, I’ve been reading your blog and you are meant to be working for yourself!
Kathryn
Thanks SO much for the encouragement Kathryn! To be honest with you, all of this support from my readers and online community is really helping me cope with this in a positive way!
Nicole,
What an AWESOME 2nd day!!! Keep up the good work! While I know your energy level may change as you settle into (not unemployment) but entrepreneurship, STAY FOCUSED!!!
Thanks so much Stephanie! I agree that “not every day is a sunny day” as my Mom always said, but overall I’m moving into a whole new climate!
Nicole,I came across your blog today and really would like to interview you for my radio show. We can do this over the phone if you’re interested. I’m pre-recording interviews for the month of August. In August, each week we’ll feature someone who has left the track they were originally on, for something more authentic to who they are….I think you’d be wonderful for the show. It would be more exposure for your blog and endeavors. If you’re interested please email me or call/text me 512.539.8218. Please visit the show web site…
Thank you,
Brigitte London
Nicole!!!! I’m so excited for you. Yes, being laid off sucks but you have a whole new chapter that is waiting for you and you are going to ROCK it. You are already way ahead of the game. This blog rocks and so many opportunities will coming flying in now that the gates are open. You seem to be handling the lay off well. My suggestions would be 1) get everything in order (seems like you are already doing that) 2) budget out your expenses for the next few months 3) Acknowledge any feelings that may come up, whether it’s anger, sadness or glee. Whatever feeling come up Feel them and they will pass. I made the mistake of trying to bury them deep down inside and it just built up resentment that eventually I had to face. 4) Most importantly, take some time to just BE and enjoy the time off whether it’s a day/ two or a week…just be. Your entrepreneur spirit will thank you. Remember you have all the support of your readers and I know you have a kick ass support system in everyday life…WOOHOO you are going to Rock this!!! xo
Nicole, what a fantastic site…two thumbs up on the concept. After a lay-off with Gatway Computers (yes, THOSE cow spotted boxes) I changed my own stars by leaving the corporate world and taking all my techie/marketing/sales experience to a remote ski area, gained more experience and then started my own company. It was the best decision that I didn’t have to struggle to make. No matter how the river of life looks as if it might be going, don’t fight it…opportunities that present themselves with ease, should be embrassed and relished. Just remember…it’s an adventure and you’re the boss!
Hey! I follow you on twitter and I am just very excited to see a woman (a young woman at that) on such a road to success! So I can say that you have catapulted into a season of prosperity and you are touching and inspiring so many lives in the process. Keep doing what you are doing and I’ll see you at the top!
