Bringing Sexy (and Smart!) Back with Four Eyes

Many women feel that they get more respect at work when they wear their eyeglasses. There’s even been talk that wearing glasses in an interview gives you an edge because the perception (read: stereotype!) is that people who wear glasses “appear” more intelligent.  And let’s be honest: although perception isn’t everything, it does matter, right?!

You and I both know that you can’t just get any pair of cat eyes though. After all, eyeglasses frames have become a signature fashion accessory that complement an individual’s style. After spending some time surfing the web (and Pinterest) I sought out to find different styles of glasses online.

Below are some of my favorites!

I found these frames on GlassesUSA.com.  If you’re a glasses gal, check out their Facebook and Twitter pages too.

  • What is your eyeglass style?
  • What do you think about the notion that glasses can give you an edge in an interview- myth or mystery?
  • When you see someone rocking a pair of glasses, do you think they’re more intelligent?

I say:  bring your sexy and smart back ladies….and do it with four eyes!

Great article and OMG I love the Coach Red frames. Makes me want to start wearing glasses again. I switched to contacts 2 years ago.

I do think there is truth in what you are saying. When I see someone who normally does not wear glasses have them on one day, I automatically think wow they look like a teacher and especially with the ladies, if they have the right frames, glasses can definitely make them look sexier. I do not find the same case with men though – I would say they can look more intelligent with glasses but I don’t necessarily find them sexier.

Hi Jessica! As I said to Beth, I am a contacts girls unless I have interviews and I was just thinking I might start wearing them to some consults…we’ll see! And I guess, perception about the glasses does differ for the sexes depending on your perspective. But, if it’s a signature item, I think it’s more about how the guy or girl wear it than the glasses itself!

I agree that the right frames make all the difference. I love the Coach frames, I’ll admit that I’ve never gotten frames in any color other than black or brown. I will make the leap one day.

Hi Laila! Funny, my glasses had only been in black or brown too until I got a dark leopard-like pattern that’s cool but professional. I’m flirting with the idea of maybe a dark red next. Have you got any colors in mind that you would switch to?

As a gal with VERY poor eyesight, I am grateful that the four-eyed look is in among young women. I find that my frames add a couple years to my age, which is helpful when you’re a young professional trying to quickly climb the ladder. But the frames have to be professional- it’s a fine balance to walk between stylish and work-appropriate. I love Robert Marc b/c they fit the bill and wear like iron.

Hi Beth!

Like you, I have had poor eye sight since my senior year of high school. Although I do wear my contacts most of the time, I had been advised since my freshman year of college to wear glasses in an interview. I definitely think you’re right about the balance between stylish and work-appropriate. Don’t want to get too crazy in a a professional setting! I guess in the end, the girl should “wear” the glasses, not the other way around. Keep rocking yours girl :)

I actually just ordered a new pair of glasses yesterday throuh Warby Parker. You should check them out! The frames are modern and it’s REALLY inexpensive. Just to get new lenses at my optometrist would have been over $400.00! I ordered thru Warby Parker and lenses + frames were a little over $100.00. Plus, they give a pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair they sell. It is such a cool business model! Check it out: http://www.warbyparker.com
They also send you 5 different pairs to try out for 5 days. I wore a different pair to work each day before deciding and everyone told me I looked smarter, weird huh? But it was great to take them for a “test run” before ordering them.
Great post!

Coach looks great! I just bought 3 new pairs a month ago or so, to reward me for a great 2011. I don’t usually wear too much jewellery, so glasses must make up for it.

That’s awesome. I have to admit…the Coach is my favorite too. Though I also have to admit, I am a jewelry junkie!

Unless of course you just want them wear it for the “sexy and smart” value! ;)
