Edinburgh

The capital of Scotland is one of the most picturesque cities in the whole of the UK. Overlooked by the historic fortress of Edinburgh Castle, the city is a combination of towering old architecture combined with elegant Georgian housing – and of course, a great modern shopping area. Edinburgh is worth a visit all year round but gets particularly exciting in the summer, when the Edinburgh Festival descends on the city, the biggest arts festival in the world which fills the streets with actors, artists, comedians and musicians at the Fringe Festival. Just be aware that the city is very expensive during August – but absolutely worth it.

The British Museum, the National History Museum and the Science Museum are all worth a visit – and, what’s better, is that they’re all entirely free.
