It’s still a man’s world out there and you fought to get the career you wanted. Now you want to do everything you can to move forward and prove yourself as a commodity to your company. You want to be the ideal employee and prove that women are just as great at men, in everything.
It’s time to step up to the plate, take the bat, and make sure that you are doing everything you can to be the best employee possible. Even when you have a day where being someone else’s lackey gets on your nerves, you just need to push forward with your mindset on your ultimate goal. If you are continually doing your part and exceeding the expectations of those with seniority to you, you can bet that sooner or later they’ll notice.
Always be willing to learn. The only way you learn on the job is to ask questions. It doesn’t make you look like you don’t know anything, instead, it makes your bosses know that you want to learn as much as possible.
Think about the questions before you ask them. If you ask them intelligently it makes you look more intelligent (makes sense, right?).
Always put in 100 percent when it comes to your job. If you can do something extra, whether it’s for the boss or for a customer, why not do it? If you can make your boss notice that you are putting your all into the job they may put out more into your paycheck.
Another thing that looks good to bosses is when you keep yourself busy. “If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean.” Even if you don’t have any work duties, find something to do.
You can’t be a great employee if you’re always bringing personal stuff with you to work. It’s just a bad move and keeps you distracted from work.
If you are serious about your job you need to stay focused on it whenever you’re on the clock (whether you actually punch a clock or that’s a figurative statement). Leave your smartphone in a drawer, thwart personal calls except in life or death situations, and get your work done (always on time or early).
If you want to get ahead on the job and impress your boss, you need to always be learning. Take on new projects, job shadow those above you when you don’t any work of your own to do, and continue asking questions.
Be the one person at your workplace that is always learning as much as they can and your boss will notice. The more you put into the job the better your chances are for getting a raise or maybe even moving up the ladder.
