Getting Back into the Workforce

return to work Getting back into the workforce

Getting back into the workforce can be difficult for anyone, especially for those who have been out of it for a time and need to break back through. It can be even more challenging for women to get back into the workforce after being home for some time and having children. However, there are some methods that you can follow to help make theĀ transitionĀ from an at-home parent to a working parent just a little easier.

Think About the Future

The first step is to think about your future and what you hope to gain from your new potential job. Are you just looking for a paycheck, do you want to build connections and climb the ladder, or are you looking to establish a career to help you grow and fulfill your dreams? As with any job and anyone that is seeking employment, it is always best to see what you are hoping for before you ever submit your first application or start to tweak your resume so that you can pare down the list and choose only jobs that are in line with the goals that you have set.

Planning

The most significant part of getting a job after children or when you have not been part of the workforce for some time is to take the time to plan honestly and truly look at all the options that are set out before you. Think about what field you want to get into, what skills you have, and what overall opportunities you are looking for before applying.

Think about all the skills you possess and how they can be applied to the types of jobs you are using. Have you gained new skills being a parent that might apply to the job you want? Do you still have the old skills you had before you left the job force or before you had kids? Or are you looking to start entirely fresh with none of the same skills that you used before?

You should also set goals as to when you want to apply, how many applications you want to put out, and you should work to keep any correspondence or information regarding your job hunt well organized so that when you do start getting replies, you are going to be able to tell who sent what. Although, as a parent, you are likely stretched, and you may be tired, having a suitable organization method will help keep your hunt streamlined and more organized overall.

Take time to Practice Interviews and To Prepare

The last thing you need to do is to start working on preparing for potential interviews. Try some practice interviews, try to figure out how you want to relate to your new potential boss, work on the wording and how you are going to approach questions like, do you have kids, and how much time are you going to need off work to take care of family matters.

Taking the time to plan and practice can help get rid of some of those jitters you may be feeling and help you get comfortable asking questions and learning how you will approach your interview and how you will come to a potential position.

Returning to work after having a child or after being out of the workforce for some time can be trying. It can be difficult, and it can be scary. But, with the proper preparation and the right attitude, you can do anything and get the job you want.
