Too Old to Study? No Way!

Self-development

As you move through life and the distance since you were last at school or university gets longer and longer, the prospect of returning to study becomes more daunting. And the statistics back up that the older you get, the less likely it is that you will be studying. However, if getting more qualifications is something that you have considered for a long time, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider throwing yourself back into the world of learning.

In this blog post, we will look at a few of the most common objections that people have about returning to study later in life, so we can overcome them and encourage you to follow your dreams.

It’s Such a Big Decision

Some people look at studying as simply too big a decision for them to make. Of course, as life goes on, it is likely that you will encounter a host of responsibilities including childcare, an existing career, and bills to pay. However, there are so many flexible online studying options out there these days that balancing your career, your home life and your learning is no longer the impossible task it once was. In fact, options like a 100% Online RN to BSN Program could end up being hugely beneficial to your career, so always ask your employer and make the case for studying as they may be willing to support you in your decision. Ultimately, if you want to go back to studying enough, you will always find a way of making it happen.

I Might Be the Oldest Person Studying

As people are living longer and looking to fill their time, more and more people are doing this with study. Most educators and trainers are experienced in catering to the needs of all types of students. And with online courses, age is a total irrelevance. Even if you do go back to a classroom environment, you will find that a lot of people are supportive of your decision, and you shouldn’t let what anyone thinks stop you from achieving what you want. In fact, returning to study when you are older gives you valuable life experience, and you are likely to approach your course with an increased sense of dedication and motivation.

I Already Have a Career

Just because you have a career, it doesn’t mean that you are prevented from ever going back to studying. If you want to have a career change or even advance in your current profession, the qualifications that you obtain can help to unlock doors for you. You are going to expand your skillset no matter what you study, and you may even increase your earning potential significantly. And as we have already mentioned a couple of times, if you choose to study online, you may even find that you can balance your studying around your current career. For many people, this gives them the best of both worlds.

I’m Not Sure If I’ll Enjoy Studying Again

There is only one way of finding out if you will enjoy studying again or not and that it by going out and doing it. Perhaps you could test the water by taking a short course with less commitment. If you find that you enjoy yourself, you could then go on to take something more advanced in the future. For a lot of people, they find that studying again gives them a new lease of life and they rediscover a passion for learning. Even if you didn’t enjoy school in the past, people change throughout their lives, and you may find that you are at the stage in your life that you can really embrace studying and developing new skills. And you don’t even have to take a course that is directly related to your current field of work. The transferable skills that you acquire may end up benefiting you in ways that you never thought about.

So, after reading through this article and some of the objections that people have when returning to study later in life, hopefully, you feel more inspired that you can overcome the obstacles in front of you. In fact, these barriers are largely ones that exist in your own mind, so it is a change in perspective that you need to develop in the first place. Ultimately, you never know until you try, so if you have been thinking about studying again, why not take the plunge?
