An analysis of over 100,000 employee reviews and nearly 300 UK companies has produced surprising results about which industries seem to deliver genuine workplace happiness.
The research, commissioned by career coach Kasia Siwosz, evaluated six of the main factors that matter to modern professional women, including company culture, diversity, work-life balance and career advancement opportunities.
The results might change how you view your next career move:
What’s particularly eye-opening is that many traditionally “prestigious” career paths with higher salaries landed squarely in the middle of the pack.
For women juggling career ambitions with personal priorities, work-life balance isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s essential.
The data reveals that government employees reported exceptional work-life balance scores (3.95), significantly outperforming many private sector roles.
“Many women assume government roles mean sacrificing career advancement for stability,” notes Kasia.
“But these findings suggest public sector employers have created environments where professionals can excel without sacrificing personal time – a balance that’s particularly valuable for women managing multiple life roles.”
Even more surprising? Legal professionals – historically known for burnout-inducing hours – scored an impressive 3.80 for work-life balance, surpassing industries like media (3.66) and fintech (3.73).
If you’ve ever wondered whether chasing the biggest salary is the path to career satisfaction, this research would suggest not.
Traditional high-paying sectors like banking (3.61) and IT (3.55) ranked below hospitality (3.66) in overall satisfaction despite offering substantially higher compensation.
This finding confirms what many successful women already know intuitively – that meaningful work and inclusive culture often contribute more to daily happiness than compensation alone.
Speaking of inclusion, the hospitality sector achieved the second-highest diversity and inclusion score (4.02) across all industries.
For women seeking environments where diverse perspectives are truly valued, this sector deserves a second look.
One clear pattern emerged when comparing traditional industries with their newer counterparts: innovation seems to benefit workplace culture.
FinTech companies (3.68) outscored traditional banking (3.61), digital media outperformed print, and online retailers created happier workplaces than high street chains.
What does this mean for ambitious women?
Companies with newer business models appear more likely to have built inclusive, forward-thinking cultures from the ground up – potentially offering more opportunities for women to advance without fighting outdated workplace norms.
Senior management received the lowest satisfaction ratings in 10 of 14 sectors, with an average of just 3.22 across all industries.
This leadership gap was particularly pronounced in logistics, where some delivery companies posted CEO approval ratings as low as 7% – a figure that should raise red flags for any woman considering roles in that sector.
After all, a supportive management team can make the difference between thriving and merely surviving in your professional life.
The bottom line?
“This research really challenges conventional thinking about ‘good jobs,'” according to Kasia.
“For women seeking true career fulfilment, looking beyond salary and title to consider the actual day-to-day experience can lead to much more satisfying professional lives.”
As you navigate your own career journey, perhaps the most valuable question isn’t “Which industry pays the most?” but rather “Where might I truly thrive?”
The answer, as this research suggests, may surprise you!
