Why do people walk the Camino de Santiago?

You can do a walking or hiking holiday anywhere in the world, from the coast of England to the mountains of Patagonia. Yet, nearly half a million people each year are drawn to one particular network of paths, known as the Camino de Santiago. So, what is so special about these pilgrim routes? Here are the main reasons behind Camino’s popularity.

Spiritual and religious findings
At its very heart, the Camino de Santiago is a journey of pilgrimage. For thousands of years, Christians have walked
these routes, with the goal of reaching the remains of St. James Apostle, at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It
was primarily a religious endeavor, where pilgrims would attend special masses and seek blessings in the churches
along the way.
Today, Camino continues to attract people for very similar reasons, although the concept of spirituality has broadened.
For many modern pilgrims, this journey serves as a form of moving meditation – an opportunity for quietness and focus
away from the noise of daily life. Regardless of their religious beliefs, people walk to mark their life transitions, heal
from loss, find a renewed sense of purpose and achieve mental clarity.

Infrastructure and accessibility
From a more practical point of view, the Camino offers many logistical advantages. Centuries of pilgrimage means that
these routes are well-established in terms of infrastructure, particularly the most popular options like Camino Frances
or Camino de Finisterre. The trails are well-marked, removing any worries about navigation, as well as have a vast
selection of eateries and accommodations along the way, including traditional pilgrim hostels (albergues).
Not just that, the Camino de Santiago is organised by experienced travel agencies, like Santiago Ways, who can organise
such services as airport pick ups or luggage transfers between hotels. With such an extensive support system, long-
distance walking becomes highly accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
Historical and cultural significance

Dating back over 1000 years, walking the Camino is like taking a step into history. This ancient journey holds a rich
historical and cultural significance, which is felt not only through the attractions visited, but also through the
traditions.
Unlike any other hiking trail, The Way of St. James has its own unique set of “rituals”. For instance, pilgrims carry a
“passport” which they can get stamped in different spots along the trail. Upon reaching Santiago, those who have
walked at least the final 100 kilometers can also receive the “Compostela” certificate of completion.
What’s more, the overall community of Camino de Santiago is incredibly friendly and supportive. There is a shared
sense of purpose and camaraderie amongst the pilgrims. It can be felt in the hostels, when sharing experiences after a
long day of walking, or on the trail, when someone greets you with a warm “Buen Camino!”.

More than just a walk…

As you can tell, the Camino de Santiago is much more than just a simple walking holiday. It’s a truly special journey, full
of personal findings, cultural immersions, deeper connections and a community spirit. So, this unique combination is
the exact reason why, even with thousands of other options available, people choose to come here.
