Health and Wellness in the Workplace

For most people, the workplace can seem like a second home. We spend most of our time there and if it isn’t a clean, comfortable place, it could become detrimental to our health. Everyone deserves to feel healthy and well in their workplace and there are some easy ways to help make that possible.

Mindset and Attitude

The mind is a powerful thing. Just believing that something is possible is sometimes enough to make it happen. Focus on achieving vibrant health results with a positive workplace mindset. Having the right attitude about your work environment can contribute to a feeling of wellness. Start the day making a list of the positive attributes that surround you. If something threatens to bring you down, read that list to yourself to pull yourself back to that positive space.

Organize

Keeping a workspace organized may be the key to feeling happy and healthy at your job. An overflowing tray of papers or a messy desk can lead to feelings of chaos or hopelessness. Taking a few minutes out of each day to organize and file things away can make things seem more doable and keep stress at bay. Coming into work each day to a clean, organized work area is a great way to start the day.

Share the Burden

Things can get overwhelming when you have an important job to do. Not many employees truly work alone so if you are able, try to delegate things that you can to avoid becoming over-stressed. If you are unable to share your workload, sometimes talking through your plans or troubleshooting with a colleague can ease the burden. Just beware of “dumping” negativity- there is a difference. Having a trusted work friend can make for a healthier, happier workplace.

Germ-free

Part of staying healthy and productive at work is keeping germs at bay. Missing work due to illness or having to come in when you don’t feel your best is not going to encourage a productive day. Frequent hand washing, well-ventilated air, and germ-free surfaces can keep employees healthy and well at work. If you do happen to get sick, be sure to get the rest you need so that you can come back healthy. Going to work sick just spreads illness and negativity.

Nutrition

Packing a healthy lunch and wholesome snacks is a great way to make sure that your nutritional needs are being met. This translates to a happier, healthier employee. Buying a fast food meal or eating at a restaurant every day is not only expensive but detrimental to your body over time as healthy options are not always available. Planning ahead to bring your own meal ensures that you keep your energy up and may even prevent a mid-day slump that many fast-food meals can cause. Also, beware of downing too many sugar-filled coffee drinks. The crash that comes later is rarely worth it.

As a professional, you are expected to perform your best. In order to do this, your best course of action is to keep yourself healthy and well. Although there are sometimes variables that are out of your control, doing your best to make wise choices for the ones you can help produce optimal results. Keeping your mind, body, and spirit healthy is possible at work.
