Essential oils can help improve your mood, help with skin ailments, and help with many different health conditions. When you first enter the world of essential oils, you may find yourself overwhelmed. You will need to take some time to research essential oils before you get started with them. Learning all that there is to know about essential oils will help you to know which oils will benefit you. 

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are oils that are extracted out of various plants. This essential oil will have its own unique scent and flavor once it is extracted. Typical extraction methods include cold pressing or distillation through steam or water. It is important to make sure that your essential oil was not processed by chemical means. Essential oils that have been processed by chemicals are not considered true essential oils and should not be used on the skin. 

What Are the Ways to Use Essential Oils?

There are several different ways that people use essential oils. How you use them will be up to you and what you are using them for. 

Aromatherapy.

Many people will use essential oils in aromatherapy. For example, putting lavender essential oil in an infuser is said to help calm the nerves. You can purchase an essential oil diffuser, or you can create a candle that helps to put off the smell of the essential oil. People also include these essential oils in various lotions, creams, soaps, and even bath bombs to get the aromatherapy benefits. 

Skin ailments.

Essential oils can be used to help treat various skin ailments. For example, tea tree essential oil can help to clear up irritated skin. It is important that if you are going to use essential oils for skin treatments, that you make sure that it is pure essential oil and that it is diluted in a carrier oil. 

Health ailments.

Some people swear by essential oils for various health ailments. People will either use the essential oils orally or topically. You must be cautious when using essential oils in this manner. Do your research well before consuming these oils. You will also want to make sure that they are pure.

Cleaning.

Many essential oils are great for cleaning. Simply dilute your favorite essential oil in water or vinegar and clean your home. Essential oils like lemon essential oil can help to clean your home well. 

Disinfecting.

There are several essential oils that make great disinfectant. During cold and flu months, consider using a mixture of water and rosemary essential oils to spray down doors, countertops, and handles. The properties in rosemary essential oil will help to kill germs that may cause illness. 

Natural pesticides.

Dealing with bugs in your home or out on your property can be a pain. Using chemical pesticides and bug repellants can cause a wide variety of health risks. Natural essential oils, like citronella, can help to ward away mosquitos and flies. Using peppermint essential oils in your home can help you to rid your home of pesky ants and spiders. It can also repel rodents. 

What Essential Oils Should I Buy to Start My Collection? 

Once you have decided to get into the world of essential oils, you may be curious as to what you should buy. You should start with the basics like:

  • Peppermint is good for opening sinuses and warding off insects.
  • Orange essential oil is good for lifting moods, cleaning, and helping various skin conditions. 
  • Rosemary is good for your breathing and to help disinfect your home. 
  • Eucalyptus essential oils are great for helping your sinuses and helping you to relax. 
  • Lavender is great for relaxation and mood-boosting. 
  • Tea tree essential oil is great for treating cuts and injuries and boosting mood. 

Essential Oil Blends

You can also pick up a few essential oil blends, rather than purchasing a bunch of individual oils right away. There are several on the market that will help you to get the benefits of these oils without breaking your bank. Great blends might include:

  • Peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus to help to encourage good breathing. 
  • Lavender and tea tree to help you to relax. 
  • Chamomile and sandalwood to help promote good sleep. 
  • A blend of citrus fruits and eucalyptus for energy. 

Getting into essential oils may seem daunting, but you will have no trouble learning and receiving all the benefits from essential oils with a little time.
