Routine

Most people have a space that they prefer to do their studying in. It will become the place that your brain associated with getting in that frame of mind. Ready to study.

Space – the space you choose should be comfortable, quiet, and as free from distractions as possible. It would help if it was a space that you felt inspired or motivated in too. Many people listen to music while they study, so try to fit this into your surroundings.

Time – the time you choose to study will have a huge impact on your ability to retain information. Try to think about the time that you are most productive and make that your goal. However, if you find that you are pushing back your bedtime, then you might need to reconsider your current routine because sleep is essential.

Planning

You should have a schedule put together that will help you manage your study time and your day to day life too. Here are a few things that can help you manage your time better.

Wall planner – Place a wall planner on the wall where you usually sit to study. This will mean that you are going to be reminded of everything important every time you look at it. Have a color code for exams, assignments and block out longer study sessions too

Alarms – Set reminders on your phone for study times, the day before an exam, and other important things.

Limits – While it might be tempting to do as much as you can without breaks, it is more beneficial for you to set a time limit. This will mean you can plan in coffee and water breaks, that you will get up and move for a minute, and that you focus better in your allotted study time.

To-do list – Spend a few minutes each morning writing down what you have to get done that day, and the topics you need to cover. Each time you tick something off, you get a bump in satisfaction and will be motivated to continue on.

Learning Style

Once you have the right space, and you know the time of day that you are able to study the most effectively, you now need to know HOW you learn best.

Some people only learn by doing, Kinetic learners need role-play, talking out loud, and working with their hands is best.

Auditory learners are going to need to listen to things. To help with that, you can read your own notes out loud and talk to others about them.  Or find podcasts or talks and listen to them.

Visual learners need to see something happening, drawings, videos, and images will help here.

After you master the basics of your own learning process, you will be able to improve how you study, and the effectiveness of each session.
